He died at the age of 27 in Paris, possibly from an accidental heroin overdose. Morrison developed an alcohol dependency during the 1960s, which at times affected his performances on stage. Morrison was sometimes referred to by other nicknames, such as “Lizard King” and “King of Orgasmic Rock”. Ray Manzarek, who co-founded the Doors with him, said Morrison “embodied hippie counterculture rebellion”. Morrison was ranked number 47 on Rolling Stone’s list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time", and number 22 on Classic Rock magazine’s "50 Greatest Singers In Rock". He was also well known for improvising spoken word poetry passages while the band played live. In the later part of the 20th century, his fame endured as one of the popular culture’s most rebellious and oft-displayed icons, representing the generation gap and youth counterculture. As a result of his lyrics, wild personality, performances, and the dramatic circumstances surrounding his life and death, Morrison is regarded by critics and fans as one of the most iconic and influential frontmen in rock music history. James Douglas “Jim” Morrison (December 8, 1943– July 3, 1971) was an American singer, songwriter, and poet, best remembered as the lead singer of The Doors.

Going Postal follows the journey of Moist Von Lipwig a, soon to be reformed, con man who is finally caught at the beginning of the story. Moist Von Lipwig (Richard Coyle) receives a difficult offer from Lord Vetinari (Charles Dance) It is also, in my opinion, the best Terry Pratchett adaptation thus far. However, if you are a long-time fan there are a lot of references and appearances from well-known characters that only add to and enrich the story. Going Postal is a self-contained story which can be enjoyed without any prior knowledge of the Discworld. Because of this, it is a good place to start for any newcomers to the world. Being one of his more recent novels, it focuses on a new character, rather than an established set such as the witches, the city watch or wizards of the unseen university. Going Postal is a two-part mini-series and the third adaptation of a Terry Pratchett Discworld novel by Sky. Richard Coyle in Going Postal Going Postal Review When the book opens, Lucy, at 63, is a successful novelist, well known enough that mentioning her name to a small-town librarian results in a request to sign a stack of books at the front desk on the way out. Most people think of New York as a challenging place to live, but as far as the gentle, easily frightened Lucy is concerned, the Big Apple has nothing on Amgash. “I have never fully understood the whole class business in America,” Lucy observes, a blind spot she shares with much of the nation, although she blames it on coming “from the very bottom of it, and when that happens it never really leaves you”. That’s how hard it is – impossible, really – to shake off your roots. Yet the Amgash series that Oh William! belongs to is named after the small Illinois farm town where Lucy grew up in “terribly bleak poverty” with harsh and sometimes abusive parents. Returning to the city by plane in Oh William!, she looks out of the window and feels “what I have almost always felt when I have flown into New York, and that was a sense of awe and gratitude that this huge, sprawling place had taken me in”. T he most unlikely thing about Lucy Barton, previously seen in Elizabeth Strout’s novels My Name Is Lucy Barton and Anything Is Possible, is how much she loves New York, where she has lived for decades. Poetry and image are closely entwined in Rossetti's work. His later poetry was characterised by the complex interlinking of thought and feeling, especially in his sonnet sequence, The House of Life. His early poetry was influenced by John Keats and William Blake. Rossetti's art was characterised by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Rossetti was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement, most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti, generally known as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, was an English poet, illustrator, painter, and translator, and member of the Rossetti family. The implications surrounding our responsibility to live, and live sensuously, are at the heart of The Ambassadors It tells the story of Lambert Strether arriving in Paris in middle-age from America to ensure the return home of his friend Mrs Newsome’s only son Chad, who has been lingering in the city and worrying his poor mother to death. While published second, The Ambassadors was written first. At the beginning of the 20th century, James published three great novels – The Wings of the Dove (1902), The Ambassadors (1903) and The Golden Bowl (1904). But what he was doing, or what his unconscious was doing, in those years as he wrote novels about English manners such as The Spoils of Poynton and What Maisie Knew, was collecting images for what would be one the most intense, valuable and rewarding short periods in the life of any artist. However, only one of them – The Turn of the Screw – matches earlier work such as Washington Square and The Portrait of a Lady. Over the next six years James wrote a number of novels and stories. The writing transforms a standard western good-guy-bad-guy plot into serious literature. No one has McCarthy's ear for regional talk, nor eye for details of place. He speaks in the purest Texan with the idiosyncratic quirk of saying "kindly" instead of "kind of". He cares enormously about the people in his county and decided to become a law officer almost as a monastic choice to atone for something that happened during the war. He has a sense of humour so dry it is almost incendiary. McCarthy's sheriff, Ed Tom Bell, a happily married, decorated second world war veteran, is respectful of life, and, like nature writer Barry Lopez, stops his vehicle and removes crushed animals from the roadway to the grassy verge. The old Texas sheriffs served as law men, psychiatrists, Mr Fixits, social workers, medical aides and lonely hearts advisers. Cormac McCarthy has chosen one of the most interesting Texas figures as the central character in No Country for Old Men - the county sheriff. |
